Issue 9: No Need to Overdress as a Golf Spectator

Next time you head to a golf tournament or watch one on TV, look around at the sea of polos, caps, and even full ensembles worn by spectators. While golf fashion has evolved for versatility, many fans overdress when attending events. But replicating pro golf outfits is unnecessary to enjoy the action.

Don't get us wrong - wearing performance golf apparel to play is perfectly practical. However, dressing in full golf garb just to watch pros play tries too hard. It perpetuates the outdated idea that fans must mimic athletes to appreciate the sport. In reality, everyday clothes are perfectly appropriate for spectators.

Imagine wearing full football (that is soccer for our American fans) kit and boots to watch a game as a fan. Golf tournaments are the same. Are people doing it because they think they might get called up to play. In the history of golf, this has never happened. Interestingly, in football it has.

We are a believer in encouraging people to wear what they want, and if that is full golf gear to watch the pros, then so be it. But, we do find the trend at tournaments to be a little bizarre.

The image of golf still has a long way to go and this sort of country club stereotype is the holding back the sport. So by all means, wear your full golf getup but also don't feel like you have to. Wear a t shirt or hoody. Wear what you want.
