Big Draw Golf

Ladies and gentlemen….introducing onto the tee (and your inbox) our very first edition of our digital newsletter: The Course Planner.

We hope to use this as a way of keeping you informed, up-to-date, and in the know about all things Big Draw, so you can follow our design process, find out when our shirts go on sale (we're looking to launch our first shirt this spring) and see some of the inspiration behind what we make.

But we’ve got ahead of ourselves because we haven’t even introduced ourselves, how rude...

Right, hello, I'm David and I started Big Draw back in the hazy mists of the pandemic with my cousin Ben. We’ve both played golf since we were the size of a pair of snapped 7 irons and until very recently we’ve seen shamefully little innovation in the world of golf clothing.

Big Draw was born out of us having grown tired of feeling like we were always dressing up like someone else whenever we went to play the game we love - so, with the world collapsing around us, we decided to do something about it, and start a new golf brand; Big Draw.

So what does Big Draw do ?

We're going to create high quality golf shirts that we'd feel as comfortable wearing on the course - as we would off it - that help grow the game by showing the world that golf is no longer a sport reserved purely for stuffy old Brigadiers who iron their socks.

AND

We'll be using each of the four Major golf championships throughout the year (The Masters, The PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open Championship) as springboards to create new and exciting shirt designs for the modern day golfer.

OK, sounds good, but what makes your shirts special ?

Well, we’re glad you metaphorically asked.

We're not going to be using the courses themselves, because, well, that felt a bit boring and obvious, but instead we’re going to be digging into the culture surrounding each of the events to draw inspiration and ideas to create truly exciting shirts that we’d be as excited to wear both on the course and off it.

So for one shirt we might be inspired by the cuisine from that area, for another it could be the architecture, for another the music scene and so on. Hopefully you get the idea. We’ll be using our findings to inform everything about the shirt from the stitching to the silhouette to try and bring you something that you find as exciting as we do.

On our instagram feed you can see how our first ‘Deep Dive’ into the culture of St Andrews and Fife has allowed us to discover some really exciting inspiration and ideas for the design of that first shirt.

Wow, it sounds brilliant, when are you launching ?

Our first shirt launches this spring and is inspired by the 150th Open Championship taking place in St Andrews in Scotland.

We’re hoping to have our first shirt in peoples hands in time for the first round in July, which means we're aiming to have them available to buy on pre-sale (more on that in a minute) in the next couple of months.

We’re currently developing our first prototype so we need to get our skates on to hit those deadlines - EEK !

We're only making 150 shirts at a time.

We're only making 150 shirts at a time because frankly that number felt nice and round, not too scary and it has a brilliant synchronicity with the "150" aspect of The Open. We may make more in the future, we may make less, we’re still finding our feet.

How do I pay for these beautiful shirts ?

We’re going to be using a demand based pre-pay model to fund the production of our shirts so we’ll be asking you to pay up-front for the shirt before it’s actually been made.

We're doing this for three reasons:

1) If we’re going to create more clothing in the world we want it to be something that's special, excellent quality, and causes as little waste as possible. We figure making shirts that people REALLY want will help us with this mission.

2) We don’t want to have sales. We want to enjoy our golf, and only do this (eventually) four times a year so we have no interest in having a load of surplus stock at the end of the season that we’re trying to shift. We want people to buy our shirts, because they love the design, they love the quality and they believe in our mission to make golf clothing that they can wear both on the course and off it.

And finally

3) We’re only small (there’s literally two of us at the moment), without any external shareholders or funding, which means we don’t have the means to bankroll a production run and simply “Hope” that we sell it all. So we’re making highly limited numbers of each design, which means when they’re gone, they’re gone.

Wow! That was a lot of reading, anything else ?

Yeah, there’s one more catch.

We’ve never done this before, which means we’re on a hell of a learning curve as we try to bring this brand to life.

We're telling you this because we want to be transparent, open and honest about what we're doing. We'll own our mistakes, and we know we're going to make a ton of them.

If you've read this far, you're an absolute hero, and we hope that you’re as excited as we are about what we’re making, and that you want to share our journey with us. See you next time.

Let’s make shirts as exciting as the Majors.
